Indian startup funding this week: AI seed rounds, a Zetwerk listing and an $11 billion bruise

Private money is still flowing to AI and healthcare, and the IPO window is open. Public market investors, meanwhile, have stopped forgiving losses. What the week's numbers say about where Indian startups stand.

Indian startups had a week of contradictions. Founders raised money, early investors cashed out handsomely, a giant IPO was swamped with bids, and listed tech stocks fell almost across the board. All of it makes sense once you look at who is buying what.

How much was raised, depending on who is counting

Indian tech and startup funding reached $245.9 million across 22 rounds in the week to 23 October, according to Tracxn data cited by The Economic Times. That was up 6.2% on the previous week but 26.7% lower than a year ago. Inc42's tally for its own week counted 17 startups raising over $184 million, a 22% dip.

Do not panic at the gap. Trackers use different date ranges and rules on which deals count. The useful signal is the direction, and both say a fairly quiet week by last year's standards.

Where the money went

The top deals tell you what investors want. Even Healthcare raised $50 million in a Series B led by Khosla Ventures, and Different raised $48 million in a seed round led by General Catalyst, per Inc42. A $48 million seed round is not a typo. It is what investors will now pay to back an AI application company early.

Early stage deals made up 70.8% of the capital raised, seed 25.2% and late stage just 4.1%, ET reported. One likely reason late stage private money looks thin is that mature companies are heading to the stock market instead.

The IPO window is very open

Reliance's Jio Platforms closed its ₹30,213 crore IPO subscribed 22.19 times, with qualified institutional buyers bidding for their portion 70.55 times, Inc42 reported citing BSE data. Retail investors subscribed their share 2.72 times. Institutions clearly wanted in.

Zetwerk, the B2B manufacturing platform, listed on Friday. Its shares closed at ₹138.30 on the BSE, 8.4% below the ₹151 issue price, The Economic Times reported, yet early backers are sitting on returns of up to 36 times. Four venture firms and an affiliate realised about ₹1,215 crore through the IPO. Inc42 asks whether scale alone can widen its thin margins. That is the question every listed startup now faces.

Public markets want profits, now

New age tech stocks lost over $11 billion in market value this week, and 63 of the 67 stocks Inc42 tracks fell, it reported. Swiggy dropped 24.5% to ₹176.70 after its results highlighted mounting losses at Instamart. Private filings tell a similar story. Myntra swung to a net loss of ₹581.8 crore in FY26, Inc42 reported, while Flipkart's super.money tripled revenue but widened its loss by 78.5%.

Retail investors chasing pre IPO shares have learned a lesson too. NSE listed only just above its ₹1,785 issue price, below what many paid in the unlisted market, The Ken reported.

The AI bubble question

Globally, OpenAI is reportedly working on a raise of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre money valuation, TechCrunch reported citing CNBC. Closer to home, Zoho's Sridhar Vembu said the company will wait for a "less bubblicious time" to invest in AI infrastructure while continuing foundational research, Moneycontrol reported. Two very different bets on the same technology.

What it means if you are building

Private investors still write big early cheques for AI and healthcare. Public investors want a path to profit. So the winning plan is the boring one, solve a real problem, prove people will pay and keep costs honest. Founders who want to find real problems first can try Earth5R's FIELDWORK fellowship, which is built on real fieldwork with real people. The market this week was clear. Growth gets you funded. Margins get you respected.
