Jio Platforms IPO allotment status: how to check it today, what the odds look like and what to do before listing day

India's largest IPO finalises allotment on Monday and lists on Wednesday. How to check whether you got shares, why most applicants will be disappointed, and how much to read into the grey market.

More than 1.35 crore applications went into the Jio Platforms IPO. Allotment is finalised today, so a very large number of people will spend Monday refreshing a registrar website with the intensity usually reserved for exam results. Here is what you need to know, and what you can safely ignore.

The issue in one paragraph

The ₹30,213 crore IPO was priced in a band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 a share, with a lot size of 12 shares, and was entirely a fresh issue of 27 crore shares, Business Today reported. It was subscribed 22.19 times and drew bids worth ₹4.90 lakh crore at the top of the band, ahead of LG Electronics India's ₹4.41 lakh crore. It is also the first issue anywhere to attract more than one crore applications.

The demand was lopsided. Qualified institutional buyers bid 70.55 times their quota and non-institutional investors 14 times. Reliance shareholders' reserved portion was booked 7.60 times. Retail investors, the category most readers will be in, subscribed only 2.72 times.

The key dates

Allotment is finalised on 26 October. Refunds start and shares reach demat accounts on 27 October. The shares are expected to list on NSE and BSE on 28 October, according to Mint's schedule and Upstox.

How to check your allotment

KFin Technologies is the registrar. On its IPO status page, choose Jio Platforms from the dropdown and enter your PAN, application number or demat client ID. Mint notes that the company name appears in the list only after allotment is officially finalised, so an empty dropdown at breakfast means patience, not bad news.

You can also check on the NSE bid verification page by choosing equity IPO bid details and the Jio symbol, or on the BSE application status page, using your PAN or application number, Upstox explains. Your bank or broker app will tell you the same thing more quietly when the blocked money is released or the shares turn up.

What the odds look like

In an oversubscribed issue, retail allotment works like a lottery for one lot. Business Today's tentative estimate put retail odds at 10 in 14, or about 71%, for a 12 share lot. For small HNIs the estimate was 10 in 88 and for big HNIs 10 in 27. Shareholders who applied for 168 shares were estimated to be assured at least 22. These are estimates, not the final basis of allotment, so treat them as weather forecasts.

The retail figure is better than you might expect for a record IPO, and it is because retail subscription was the weakest category. The crowd showed up in numbers, but not with enough money per head to swamp its own quota.

About that grey market premium

The Economic Times put the grey market premium at ₹247, implying a listing gain of about 22.07%, according to a report. Business Today had earlier quoted ₹250 to ₹260.

The grey market is an unofficial, unregulated market in shares that do not yet exist. It is a mood ring, not a price. It also arrives in a week when broader stocks are under pressure. Zetwerk, another big debutant, listed at a 5% premium on 23 October and then fell more than 20% from its listing price during the session, BusinessLine reported. Listing days can turn quickly.

Our view

If you got shares, decide before Wednesday whether you bought a listing pop or a long term holding, and write the answer down. People who decide at 10 am on listing day, with a red and green ticker in front of them, rarely decide well.

If you didn't get shares, your money returns on Tuesday and nothing bad has happened to it. At a market value Business Today put at ₹10.3 lakh crore, Jio will be a large, liquid stock that you can buy on any ordinary day. Missing an IPO is only a tragedy if you believe the company closes for business on listing day.
