Why Indian markets fell this week, and the numbers that actually matter
Oil is near $117 and foreign funds are still selling. Small caps just had their worst week since early 2025. A plain account of the week, and what to watch before you open your portfolio again.
If your portfolio app looked a little grey this week, you were not imagining it. The Nifty fell 2.4% in a holiday-shortened week and closed at 22,600, after losing ground in all four sessions, according to The Economic Times. The Sensex gave up 2.1% and Bank Nifty 2.8%. The real damage was further down the market. The Nifty Midcap 150 slid 5.5% and the Smallcap 250 fell 7.1%, its steepest weekly drop since February 2025, Business Today reported.
So what happened? Mostly one thing with a long tail: oil.
Oil is doing the talking
Brent crude futures rose 3.1% on Friday to settle at $116.72 a barrel, the highest close since 29 April, News18 reported. That was Brent's third straight weekly gain, up 6.2% for the week, as markets priced in the risk of fresh US strikes on Iran.
India imports most of its oil, so expensive crude travels quickly. It raises the import bill, squeezes company margins and keeps inflation worries alive. You can already see the cost in places you might not look. HPCL's chairman told analysts that the loss on each 14.2 kg domestic cooking gas cylinder will rise to ₹327 in November, up from ₹245 in October, BusinessLine reported. Somebody pays for frozen prices eventually. For now it is the state fuel retailers.
Foreign money is leaving, Indian money is staying
Foreign institutional investors were net sellers for a tenth straight week, dumping ₹26,970 crore of shares. That sounds alarming until you see the week before, when they sold ₹89,910 crore. Meanwhile domestic institutions bought ₹1,09,420 crore, their tenth week in a row as net buyers. Your monthly SIP is, in a small way, part of the cushion. Without it, this week would have looked much worse.
The rupee stayed just below 95 to the dollar, helped by steps from the Reserve Bank, according to Business Today. Gold, usually the comfort blanket, offered no comfort. MCX gold settled at ₹1,42,024 per 10 grams, down 21.43% from its record of ₹1,80,779 in January, Mint reported.
The economy underneath is not falling
Here is the part that gets lost in red screens. The underlying economy is still growing at a decent clip. HSBC's flash composite PMI rose to 56.7 in October from 55.9, with services at 56.2 and factory output at 57.6, Hindustan Times reported. Anything above 50 means expansion. The RBI's October bulletin pointed to GDP growth of 7.8% in the first quarter of this financial year, News18 noted.
The IMF also raised its forecast for India's growth this financial year to 7% from 6.4%. Its Asia chief, Krishna Srinivasan, listed the risks: energy prices tied to the Strait of Hormuz, a rupee under pressure, higher borrowing costs, AI uncertainty and El Nino. "The biggest worry is if all of these come together," he told India Today.
Not everyone was selling
Proof that appetite has not vanished came from the Jio Platforms IPO. It was subscribed 22.19 times and drew bids worth ₹4.90 lakh crore, with more than 1.35 crore applications, the first issue anywhere to cross one crore, Business Today reported.
And one number that has nothing to do with markets but everything to do with mornings: Delhi's AQI on 24 October was 191, the lowest reading for that date in a decade outside the Covid years, against 306 in 2024, India Today reported. One good day is not a trend. If cleaner cities are your cause, Earth5R's urban sustainability work on rivers and waste is one place to start.
What to watch next week
Three things. Crude, because it is driving almost everything else. Foreign fund flows, to see whether the selling keeps slowing. And results season, with several big companies reporting. If you invest every month, a week like this is the reason you do it every month and not all at once.
