Meteors don't just burn up. What really happens is far more violent

ScienceDaily · 2026-10-29

Scientists have uncovered seven surprising stages that space rocks go through as they hurtle toward Earth, revealing that melting and violent fragmentation, rather than simple evaporation, determine their fate. The discovery could help explain why meteorites scatter across the ground and how dangerous asteroids explode in Earth's atmosphere.

NASA discovers Jupiter’s invisible shield is more complex than Earth’s

ScienceDaily · 2026-10-29

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has discovered that Jupiter uses a surprisingly complex system of powerful plasma waves and multiple shock regions to defend against the solar wind. The findings reveal major differences between Jupiter and Earth and could help scientists understand the enormous shock waves produced by exploding stars.

Ribbon made of carbon pentagons and heptagons has metallic properties

Nature · 2026-10-28

Nature, Published online: 28 October 2026, doi:10.1038/d41586-026-03298-3 Ribbons that are composed exclusively of five- and seven-carbon rings have metal-like electron transport and conductance. The ribbons can be synthesized by linking previously inaccessible chains of paired five-membered rings, providing a route to making highly conducting carbon nanoribbons.

Scientists discover a secret glow in toxic fire salamanders

ScienceDaily · 2026-10-28

Researchers have discovered a surprising hidden ability in Europe's familiar black-and-yellow fire salamanders: they glow green and cyan under ultraviolet light.
